Serious debates have been raging on over the issue of lowering the legal drinking age in the country. Both sides of the argument have strong opinions on the subject which further intensifies the debate.

Those who want to keep the minimum legal drinking age at 21 believe that lowering the drinking age will cause serious harm to teens. Citing the physical changes and peer pressure that a typical teenager goes through, they stress that allowing individuals to drink at a younger age makes them more vulnerable to the dangers of drug and substance abuse, as well as unprotected sex, depression, violence and other social problems. Underage drinking causes a person to become an alcoholic later in life, according to them.

On the other hand, advocates of lowering the drinking age to 18 stress that greater damage is caused when teens are prohibited from drinking alcohol. According to them, prohibition encourages teenagers to drink unsupervised. Presumably, if they are allowed to drink in a regulated environment, alcohol-related injuries or accidents will be minimized. They also believe that it is better to teach the kids to drink responsibly and in moderation than let them drink unsupervised and bring damage to themselves.

Both parties have reasonable arguments. I’m sure that if asked, they are prepared to bring out statistics and studies supporting their sides. For those who are not aware, underage drinking is already allowed in many states if it’s done on private premises and with parental consent, if it serves religious purposes, and if it’s for educational purposes.

So, is lowering the drinking age is still an issue? What do you think?

Drinking alcohol is not without its effects – most of it are not good. Yet, alcohol is present almost throughout human history. People drink for different reasons – to celebrate, to have fun – either alone or with friends. Many young people drink casually, referred to as social drinking, without the intention of getting drunk. But when does a person cross the line that separates a social drinker from a problem drinker?

While there’s no single definition of a problem drinker, many of us will agree that when alcohol drinking leads to something troublesome – whether accidents or relationship issues – then there’s a problem. If you are worried about your drinking habits, ask yourself these questions and answer truthfully to determine if you are about to become a problem drinker:

  1. Am I drinking more often than usual for the past several weeks?
  2. Am I getting into financial troubles due to too much drinking?
  3. Is my drinking affecting my personal relationships?
  4. Have I lost friends since I began drinking too often?
  5. Have I been to a hospital or arrested as a result of drunken behavior?

If you answered yes to most or all of these questions, it indicates that you have a drinking problem. Start taking steps now in controlling your drinking habit to avoid getting into greater problems. It would be good for you and the people around around you.
